“As an artist, you cannot just hide in your own tower. You should be concerned about society, about human beings, about the environment.” said Cultural Art Medallion recipient, Artist Chng Seok Tin

My first encounter with Artist Chng Seok Tin was at an art exhibition held at Changi City Point organised by VSA in 2014.
Artist Chng is a distinguished Singapore artist who is awarded the Cultural Medallion Award in 2005, the highest honour in recognition of our local artists and their contributions. She held more than 28 solo exhibitions and exhibited her art in Singapore, Europe, USA, Australia, China and Asia. She studied art in many places including UK, France and USA and graduated with 2 Masters in Art and was formerly an art lecturer at La Salle Art School in Singapore. She was awarded ‘Woman of the Year’ by Her World magazine in 2001 and was inducted into Singapore Women’s Hall of Fame in its inaugural year in 2014. Her creativity extends far beyond her art to the literary scene and lyrics writing. She has published 13 books using her own art illustrations and written the lyrics for 3 songs, one of them ‘Walk Out of the Darkness, My Friend’ was popularized by local singer, Kit Chan.
She became blind after an accident in 1988 but was never discouraged by her own setbacks and excelled beyond her limitations. Being a Singapore woman artist of such great accomplishments, she comes across as someone who is of great humility and with a positive and philosophical outlook on life.
Artist Chng’s art provides a voice that advocates beyond the confinement of her studio. As she once said, “As an artist, you cannot just hide in your own tower. You should be concerned about society, about human beings, about the environment.”
I have just encountered an exceptional Singapore woman artist who is a source of inspiration!
